Ignite 2025: SharePoint Steps Up as Copilot’s Knowledge Platform

If you’ve been watching the buzz around Microsoft Ignite this year, you know SharePoint is having a moment. It’s not just the backbone for files and collaboration anymore—it’s the trusted foundation for Copilot and agents, and it’s powering some of the most exciting advances in digital work.

Let’s walk through what’s new, what’s working, and what’s coming next.

Copilot + SharePoint: Smarter Answers, Real Context

Here’s the thing: AI is only as good as the data it can understand. That’s why Copilot’s new ability to “reason” over SharePoint content is such a game-changer. We’re talking about more than just searching for files—Copilot now understands metadata, intranet pages, the full richness of Office files (even images!), and encrypted documents with sensitivity labels.

What does that mean for you? Imagine asking Copilot for a contract summary and getting a response that’s not just accurate, but tailored to your company’s workflows and security needs. Metadata in SharePoint document libraries isn’t just “extra info”—it’s the secret sauce that makes automation and discovery work. And now, Copilot can use that to deliver answers that are consistent and reliable, whether you’re managing product catalogs, legal docs, or marketing assets.

And it’s not just about documents. Copilot can now surface insights from SharePoint pages—so all that institutional knowledge you’ve built up over the years is finally easy to find and use. Even images in PowerPoint decks are fair game, making it easier to pull out the details you need without endless scrolling.

Security? Copilot respects sensitivity labels and encrypted files, so you get insights from your most protected content—without compromising compliance.

Knowledge Agent: Real Customer Impact

The Knowledge Agent public preview is already making waves. Over 1,500 tenants have jumped in, and the feedback is clear: this is changing how teams manage and discover content.

Mars Inc. called auto-filled metadata a “total game-changer” for their legal department. Kelly Mickelson, their Chief of Staff, said, “This takes seconds to set up, and instantly, you can know what’s in the corpus of documents.” Mott MacDonald, a UK engineering firm, is seeing new possibilities for intelligent curation and process efficiency. Allegis Global Solutions is also impressed by how these features are streamlining their workflows.

And here’s a practical update: you can now opt in to Knowledge Agent at the site level, not just tenant-wide. That means you can pilot new features, gather feedback, and build confidence before rolling out across your whole organization. At general availability (targeting early 2026), Knowledge Agent will be fully included with your Microsoft 365 Copilot license.

Agentic Creation Skills: Build and Automate, No Code Needed

One of my favorite Ignite demos this year was seeing SharePoint agents in action. You can now create pages and lists directly from Copilot chat—just @mention the agent and describe what you need.

Want a list of top-selling products by geography? Just ask. Need a project summary page? Copilot’s got you covered.

Custom agents built in SharePoint are now accessible in Copilot Chat and downloadable from the Agent Store. That means automation and intelligence are just a click away, whether you’re in Teams, SharePoint, or Copilot.

Managing agents is easier, too. The Microsoft 365 Admin Center now gives you a single pane of glass to view, block, and report on agents—including those built in SharePoint. Usage and billing insights are rolling out soon, so you’ll have a clear picture of adoption and cost.

Smarter Governance with the SharePoint Admin Agent

Ignite unveiled a new AI-powered SharePoint Admin Agent (now in public preview) that helps IT automatically enforce governance at scale. This agent monitors for inactive or overshared sites, permission sprawl, and other risks, then takes action – like archiving stale sites or tightening access – to keep your environment secure and organized. Translation: Your SharePoint can now partially ‘self-clean’ and optimize with AI, reducing manual admin work.

Reach More People, Automate More Tasks

New integrations make SharePoint content more impactful. Viva Amplify is now integrated into SharePoint, allowing you to promote a news post from SharePoint across multiple channels (Outlook, Teams, Viva Engage, etc.) in one step – no copy-pasting, and with unified analytics to track reach.  This means all the new AI-powered creation tools for SharePoint pages that let you start with a prompt, or a Madlib-style query, or related documents to build the page can now be distributed via Amplify.

Meanwhile, AI-powered workflows in SharePoint Lists let you build or customize business processes using plain-language prompts and a library of templates. In short, not only is SharePoint feeding Copilot with great knowledge, it’s also making your intranet content easier to distribute and your processes easier to automate.”

More Ignite Goodies: FAQs, News, Workflows, and More

SharePoint’s getting smarter in other ways, too. The FAQ web part now uses AI to suggest updates, lets you import existing content, and makes it easy to share direct Q&A links.

eSignature is now built into SharePoint, and it’s reached full global availability (GA) so you can send documents for signature—securely and compliantly—without leaving your workflow.

ree

Finally pay-as-you-go storage is coming soon, giving admins more flexibility and control over costs.

What’s Next?

All these updates underscore that SharePoint has truly stepped up as the knowledge platform for Copilot. From enriched content understanding (metadata, pages, images, protected files) to intelligent content management (Knowledge Agent auto-tagging, Admin Agent governance) and creation/distribution tools (on-demand page/list creation, Viva Amplify integration), SharePoint is not just storing information – it’s actively organizing, protecting, and broadcasting the knowledge that Copilot and your people need.

The bottom line: a smarter SharePoint means smarter Copilot answers and a more connected, efficient organization.
